Audio Quality Test: iPod vs. Zune

Posted by Stephane Dion

Which one is better? The Zune or the iPod? Difficult to say but CNET-Crave found a way to avoid fan bias. They did a simple "Coke-Pepsi challenge" with people in the street.

Participants had to listen to each player and tell them which one sounds the best. Of course, just like the old "Coke-Pepsi challenge", they didn’t know what player they were listening to.

Results of the test: iPod: 2 and Zune: 4. So, based on a very small number of people, the Zune has a much better sound quality.

Great news! I wonder what would be the result with a few hundred people.

While a Coke vs. Pepsi-style challenge is valid, I'm wondering what the EQ settings were on both devices? Were they both set to "Flat?" Did the test include having the user listen to the same piece of music with varied EQ settings? THIS can make a big difference. I've listened to both devices and with different EQ settings and have noticed a quite a difference between the two even though the EQ settings would otherwise be the same.

this kind of comparison is not reliable, we need so many more ppl, maybe at least hundreds and see the vote result. Anyway, I'm happy to see the result as I've traded the Ipod for the new Zune!

I think this was a good way to see how people would respond. I personally have a Zune and I love it. There is no EQ settings on it to be adjusted so I think that the Zune won this far and square.

I do believe that it's what a person perfers, however. Some love Apple products and some Microsoft! I used to want an iPod but after receiving my Zune as a gift, I wouldn't trade it for an iPod at all! I can share music with others who have a Zune with a click of a button on my Zune!
