Microsoft Surpasses the 1 Million Zune Sold Objective

Microsoft announced in their latest earnings call that Zune easily reached their objective of a million Zune sold over the first seven months of market introduction. In fact, the Zune mp3 player reached 1.2 million units shipped on June 30th, 2007.

Many people thought the Zune would never reach this target when it was first announced by Microsoft last November. It’s also interesting to note that this also means that the Zune should also reach the two million Zune sold milestone before November 14th, a full year after the initial Zune launch. Two million Zunes in the first year? Considering that no flash Zune was available and the Zune was available only with hard disk capacity, this is not bad at all.

Microsoft has now to prove to its million base customers that they did the right choice. The lack of new Zune features in the last seven months has irritated many Zune early adopters. Second generation Zune models are still in the work, we know that for sure, but Microsoft still has to give the market a clear Zune roadmap. A flash Zune? Larger HDD? A new form factor? A PSP like Zune player? It’s also unclear when the Zune could be released in Canada or Europe.

But I’m pretty sure that the wait is almost over. If Microsoft really wants to release new players for the next holiday season, we should hear about it very soon…

Has anyone heard what there sales objective is for FY2008? I think anything less than 4 million units (in U.S.) would be a failure. But it shouldn't be too difficult to achieve with the addition of a inexpensive flash-based player.
