New Zune Accessory: The Zune Car Pack

Posted by Jonas D

Zune_car_pack With the new Zunes, there's some new accessories on the way as well.  Listening to a Zune is great, but those included earbuds aren't worth much when it comes time to listen to some music while driving along the road.  Hence, the new Zune Car Pack.

This is an FM transmitter straight from the Microsoft folks that promises to make it easy to use by finding a free station for you (I've recently had mixed results with this approach with a similar device from a different manufacturer see here for specifics).  Being a Zune product, it does have two innovative features.  The first is a magnetic clip to keep wires out of the way which is great as I often get tangled between the music, the GPS and the radar detector.  As my dashboard is plastic, I hope they took that into account.  The second is that a Zune can be charged from the cigarette lighter auxiliary power output so there's never an excuse to run out of power.  It does have presets for two stations, so you can keep the free ones locked in.

The Zune Car Pack will retail for $79.99, and will be available with the new Zune line on November 13th of this year

I can't stand FM transmitters. They're rarely, if ever crystal clear.

Tape adapters FTW.

You're much better off if you can use a cassette adapter. They're cheaper, better audio quality, simpler to set up, and require no batteries or external power. Unfortunately, less car manufacturers are putting cassette decks into their stereos, so some folks will have to go the FM transmitter unless they want to have an audio dock installed which can be quite expensive.

We'll see if the Zune transmitter has the same issues I've experienced with other manufacturers.
