Zune/WHS Bug Could Spell Trouble for Your Data

Posted by

WindowsserverIt can't be that fun for Microsoft when its products won't play nice together. In this particular case we are talking about the Zune and the Windows Home Server.

An issue involving the Home Server apparently cropped up sometime ago, according to PC Pro, in which a bug exists when "people use a third-party application to edit or transfer files on a Windows Home Server with more than one hard disk." Microsoft is aware of this problem but doesn't see having a fix for this file corruption problem until later this year.

What does this have to do with the Zune you say? Well, PC Pro says one of the applications known to cause this problem is the Zune software. This has been a matter of factual discussion on blogs such as Engadget of late, so all we can say is proceed with caution if you have these two devices.

I own a Windows Home Server that I have been using from the very beginning with Zune. It works great. Now it is true there are special cases where it might be possible that datafiles get corrupted on WHS if you edit the file over the network. But its not as simple as that..you have to have a certain configuration for the problem to occur. I edit files all the time..without a problem. Microsoft has estimated they will release a patch in June. What do I use Windows Home Server for...

- Backup three computers in our home
- Rip'd all our CDs and let our home computers access the shared music library
- Store Photos & Videos
- Give my mom & dad web access to photos

In Zune Software on all our computers I configured the library/rip/etc folders to point to the server.
