Nine Inch Nails Offers Free Album

Posted by Jonas D

Nineinchnails It looks like another group has gone the way of "Radiohead marketing" and giving away the entire album for free.  This time it's the folks at Nine Inch Nails.  From their website:

as a thank you to our fans for your continued support, we are giving away the new nine inch nails album one hundred percent free, exclusively via nin.com.

the music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE.  your link will include all options - all free. all downloads include a PDF with artwork and credits.

for those of you interested in physical products, fear not. we plan to make a version of this release available on CD and vinyl in july. details coming soon.

I downloaded the MP3's and it was an 87 meg download, so while this won't help dial up users, it was the fastest album I ever acquired.  I also like that they included a choice of file types on their site.  With a Zune 80, it's great to toss these tracks on, and who knows when the shuffle feature might get to them.  With a download like this, there really is no use for a CD of this album.  Wonder what their bandwidth bill will be this month.

This is (sorta) the second album NIN has released this way. They offered 1/4 of Ghosts 1-4 on their website a couple of months back (tracks 1-9, I think.) Of course you had to pay $5 for the ENTIRE album (which was well worth it) but who's scoffing?

Also, what I liked about this latest release (still haven't listened to it yet, unfortunately) is the fact that they allowed you to download ALL 4 formats if you so desired. I have no use for the apple lossless they provided, but I DID download the High-Def 24/96 version as well as the flac's. I used my flac's to convert to mp3 for my Zune. Will be listening today!

Thanks NIN!
